Long checkout lines, spiteful motorists, family stress and a sagging economy all add up to frustration and unrest at this time of year when peace should abound. Author Bryan Hurlbut says, "With so much to be grateful for, don't let frustration with the election, fear of financial woe and family failure rob you of a wonderful Christmas season. Remember that the original Gift of Christmas came in the gentle light of a child. So, as you look at the darkness around you, remember that joy is a decision away. Here are a few practical things to help turn your Christmas jeer into Christmas cheer:

Give yourself time. If you feel the need to rush, break your outing into three separate ones or rearrange your schedule so you have more time. You can postpone almost anything if you choose to. Do not be afraid to exercise your right for freedom at this time of year.
Stop for a Christmas treat. Make a point to take a break during your holiday chores. You may not feel like it, but you are working and there is stress involved. Make yourself stop to enjoy a much-earned Christmas treat and remember the reason you are running around.
Take a detour. Find ways to travel that you may have never gone before. Driving, walking, cycling or bussing a different route will introduce you to things you may have never noticed and will make the journey more enjoyable. But remember, get off the phone and enjoy the scenery."

Bryan Hurlbut is the author of Making It Count (ISBN 1-934454-13-3, Synergy Books) which is available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Ingram, Baker & Taylor and at fine bookstores nationwide.
